frequently asked questions
How can mindfulness help me?
Mindfulness works to retrain your brain - to break negative thinking patterns by actively shifting your focus to the present moment. It fosters a state of relaxation that has a positive effect on both your health and your sense of well-being. Mindfulness can be a powerful tool if you are suffering from stress, anxiety, depression, sleep troubles, substance misuse, relationship troubles or any other distress that is negatively affecting your life.
I've never done mindfulness before. Is it just about staying calm?
Mindfulness brings awareness to the present moment. It allows you to shift your focus from distressing thoughts about the past and the future, to what is actually happening to you right here, right now. Trying to stay calm is difficult to do, but when you practice mindfulness regularly, one of the benefits may be a sense of calm as you let distressing thoughts simply come and go, and not get swept away.
Do I have to change my whole lifestyle to make this work for me?
No - anyone with any lifestyle can endeavour to learn mindfulness and welcome it into their life! In order to fully realize the benefits of your mindfulness practice, we do recommend making time for it every day; however, you don't need to spend hours at a time. Simply checking in with yourself briefly but regularly throughout the day will provide grounding and you will likely begin to see a shift towards a more positive way of living and a healthier sense of well-being.
I meditate, but am struggling in my life. How is this different than meditating?
There are many different types of meditation. We practice a specific type which focuses on paying close attention to what is going on in the moment. Further, we combine the focus from meditation with techniques from cognitive behaviour therapy and the Sedona Method to create an effective process for creating change in our lives.
